Eighth graders get a glimpse of Eldorado offerings

By Emily Rosaaen

On January 23rd, 8th graders flooded into Eldorado to get a taste of what next year could look like for them.

Eighth graders from different middle schools in the district came to Eldorado’s 8th grade night to check out some of the electives and clubs the school offers. Some classes the students were interested in were culinary arts, spanish, and photography.

“(I’m interested in) culinary arts, maybe gardening,” said Steven Tjung, an 8th grader at Jackson Middle school.

Students got to look at a few of the sports at Eldorado, and they were interested in things like color guard, cheer, and track and field.

“I’m going to join the swim team and cross country team (next year),” said Erin Conley, an 8th grader at Eisenhower Middle School.

Some of the students were nervous about the transition between schools because of grades and the much harder work load.

“As students move from that middle school to high school level, the size of the campus can be really intimidating. Just being around so many people that they don’t know and just being nervous to make new friends,” said Rachel Weihe, the serving interim principal, and assistant principal for curriculum and instruction.

Students were excited to start high school soon because of the new people, and the sports and clubs offered.

“I’m excited for just the bigger sense of the school community, and sports games, clubs, stuff like that," said Conley.

There are many different ways that Eldorado is trying to help the students find the right classes for them.

“Right now, all of our counselors are going into middle schools, and they’re talking with students (about high school),” said Weihe.
