Eldorado Students "Caring" for Flour Babies

By Michelle Taylor

Students in child development in Eldorado High School recently learned a valuable lesson about the responsibilities of being a parent in child development taught by Jamie Escobedo.

For one week, each student became the parent of a flour baby. They were required to take their flour babies with them everywhere they went, both in and out of school, and to care for them as they would a real baby.

“Many kids cannot take this responsibly. The students can break their flour baby and even lose their baby just on the first day,” said Escobedo.

Several staff members were to keep watch for abused, neglected, or abandoned Flour Babies throughout the school day. Many teachers incorporated the project into class discussions since it was a “learnable moment” and “funny moment”.

Many students have wondered why not electronic babies?

“That’s working with young children and these are mostly 9th graders working with the flour babies” said Escobedo.

This assignment teaches the students a powerful message of being a responsible young adult and to be careful out in the world. Students enjoyed this assignment even tho it got heavy

“It was a learnable lesson and it was sorta fun to have the baby by your side even if it’s not a real baby,” said Hannah O'Connell.
