Newest Mutation: Omicron

By: Sophia Hale

With covid cases on the rise again, the world introduces the newest variant of SARS-CoV-2: Omicron Virus. The mutation was discovered in late November 2021 in South Africa, soon brought to the United States. The virus is so new, not much information has been released about it or its statistics. The mutation is known for spreading easier with more mild symptoms such as a common cold. (Sore throat, fever, aches, sniffling, etc)

Although symptoms may be mild, the virus is covid-19. According to the Disease Control Prevention, “CDC is working with state and local public health officials to monitor the spread of Omicron. As of December 20, 2021, Omicron has been detected in most states and territories and is rapidly increasing the proportion of COVID-19 cases it is causing.” This may be a cause for concern for many, but as we have gone through the pandemic the past two years, we have learned some precautions from catching covid-19.

Since Omicron is a variant of covid, this could be the reason to why covid cases are shooting up so high. Considering that omicron is significantly more contagious than COVID-19, the likeness of these cases are probably omicron. Not just in the U.S. but everywhere. ON January 4, 2022, reporters on CNN stated, “Covid-19 positivity rate shoots up as Delhi and Mumbai register thousands of new cases,” the article states that the two cities have collectively recorded at least 25,831 new Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours. Delhi currently has a positivity rate of 11.88% with 10,665 new cases. Mumbai confirmed 15,166 new cases were recorded in the city in the past 24 hours. The city currently has more than 61,000 active cases.
