Eldorado High School hosts several performing arts groups, many of which are among the best in Albuquerque. Among these groups is Eldorado's orchestra group who are among the best string players in New Mexico.
Eldorado's orchestra has a history of excellence through competitions and general performances. As a group, the orchestra often scores well in MPA, the music performance assessment, and in particular many individuals stand out as great players.
“We’re actually pretty good during MPA and we’ve gotten some pretty good scores on that stuff . A lot of our orchestra is usually in district or all-state”, said Renée Petrie, a violin player in Eldorado's top orchestra.
The success of the orchestra is due, in part, to the great instructors they have such as the current teacher of orchestra at Eldorado, Mrs. Maria Stefanova.
“She has definitely pushed us to be better in orchestra and as students…she's really just pushed us to be team players”, said Reneé.
Orchestra also gives students an opportunity to get out of school and go too many different events and locations throughout Albuquerque.
“We went to Pope Joy… coming up, we have a trip to AYS (Albuquerque Youth Symphony) like the building,” said Madeline Dickinson, another violinist in Eldorado's top orchestra.
Most importantly, the orchestra is a very open group and acts as a place that anyone can have fun at!
“In terms of our community, we probably have one of the strongest communities compared to other orchestras. We have a large variation of skill in our orchestra, there's some people who take it really seriously and there are some people who are there just to have fun… I think we just have the most fun out of a lot of orchestras in APS,” said Lauren Doupe, a cello player in the top orchestra.
All of these little things add up to create Eldorado's great orchestra and have laid the path for all of their competitions and performances including their early spring concert on Feb. 15.
