Too much tea

By Samantha Benjey

Despite Eldorado students attending school online, the campus is not the limit where bullying takes place. On Instagram, several drama, or “tea,” accounts have arisen under Eldorado’s name. These accounts ask people to anonymously send drama in via direct message or Google Forms and they will post about it, whatever it may be. Several posts contain rumors, expose students or teachers names, and disclose confessions.

“At first I started this account because I was bored. But I’ve kept it now because I can help people who need advice or someone to talk to,” said the account owner of _eldorado_tea in an Instagram direct message conversation. He or she did not reveal his or her identity. “I make sure not to post people’s opinions on others … cause to me that’s cyberbullying.”

Students who follow the accounts feel differently about the content posted.

“They are generally not positive and airing things that people don’t need to know,” said sophomore Myra Lacy. “I think they are a form of cyberbullying.”

The owner of the account @confessions_eldorado says the account was created for fun.

“I try my best not to post things that will promote bullying,” said the owner of @confessions_eldorado, who was also reached by DM and also remained anonymous. “If something is super serious I won’t post it.”

Alyssa Mehring, a junior attending Eldorado, gave a more light-hearted response.

“Just don’t listen to rumors and don’t let people bring you down,” said Alyssa. “You know in your own mind what is true and what is not.”

According to Ms. Trisha Mertens, an Eldorado counselor, this has been happening across the district. And legally, there isn’t much APS could do. Administration has tried reporting the accounts to Instagram, but Instagram hasn’t taken any action. Ms. Mertens suggested contacting the Albuquerque Police Department.

“Once APD gets involved they will be able to get those searches and warrants,” Ms. Mertens explained.

If you are a victim or your name has been mentioned in one of these posts, inform a trusted adult and contact APD immediately.
